Elias W. Beckwith
American, 1830-1905
MaleElias W. Beckwith advertised a Union Daguerrean Gallery in in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania in January to April, 1856. The ads all say he is in town but a few days. He was based in Great Bend, Pennsylvania in the 1860s, though it is possible he continued to travel, as he is known to have been in Alexandria, Virginia and Binghamton, New York during that time. In the early 1870s he was based in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, where his wife died in 1874. An 1875 advertisement offered views along the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and a notice in June of that year stated that he was then taking views on the Pennsylvania Coal Company's "gravity road between Scranton and Hawley." In November, 1876 it was noted that Charles Goodell was opening a studio in the Plymouth gallery formerly occupied by Beckwith. In March, 1877 he built a studio on Main and Eno Streets in Wilkes-Barre. He remarried later that year. Three years later he retired to his farm in Broome County, New York and was succeeded by James Beacham. He died in Binghamton, New York in 1905.
