View raw data

As early as 1865 Adoniram Judson Alden was working as a photographer in the studio of his brother, Augustus Ephriam Alden in Providence, Rhode Island. With the expansion of the business starting about 1868, Adoniram became an equal partner, and the brothers managed branches in Springfield, Massachusetts, Saratoga Springs and New York City. This partnership is identified in advertisements as late as 1874. In 1876, Adoniram managed the Providence studio, while Augustus established himself in Boston as the Alden Photo Co. with Edward D. and John A. Alden (the partners were his two sons, aged 6 and 9). In the 1880, Adoniram also applied the name Alden Photo Co. to the Providence studio. Through the 1890s and 1900s he was occasionally listed as a photographer in Boston, presumably in Augustus' studios, and he briefly had a studio in Weymouth. From 1915 to 1925 he had a studio in his home in Springfield, and retired by 1930. He lived at least until 1938; his wife was listed as a widow in the 1940 census.
