William T. Shanahan was a restorer of musical instruments first in San Francisco and by the mid-1860s in Portland, Oregon. His shop also hawked Mrs. C. M. Chapman's Hair Restorer. In 1867, he began advertising as a "Music & Art Gallery." It is possible that his business absorbed the photo gallery of Hendee, which operated upstairs. He published stereoviews of Portland, though his advertising suggests that the music business was his primary concern. He was president of a piano manufactruing company after the turn of the century. About 1905, he founded and became secretary of the Oregon Humane Society.
