Benjamin Pierce Batchelder was one of three brothers who all took up photography in the mid 1840s in Boston. By 1851, he had relocated to California. He made a couple of trips to Australia, spending the bulk of the 1860s in Sandhurst, Victoria before returning and settling in Stockton, California for the remainder of his career.
