Thomas R. Lewis was born in Salem, Massachusetts in August, 1846. He was an artist there by 1866, and was an artist still at the time of his marriage there to Martha Moulton in 1872. He was still living there in 1874, though no occupation was given. On the 1880 census he was a photographer boarding in Stoneham. He was married but his wife was not with him. At some point, Martha died and he remarried in 1887. He was an artist in Newmarket, which may refer to a neighborhood of Boston. Otherewise, his whereabouts in the 1880s are not known. By 1891 he had a photo studio in Amesbury, where he remained until his death in 1901.There is a Thomas Lewis, born 1841 in England, who was working in Massachusetts at the same time, and who also died in 1901. These are different photographers, though some sources confuse the two.
