There is some confusion as to Afred Costello's middle initial. He is first found in the 1880 census without a middle initial, and born in Ireland ca. 1862. In the city directory for Jersey City in that year is an entry for Alfred M. Costello, a printer living at the same address as Albert Bernard Costello, Sr. After the death of the elder Costello, the studio continues as Alfred B. Costello into the 1910s. Alfred M. Costello, born ca. 1864 in New York, appears on the 1900, 1910 and 1930 censuses as a photographer in Great Barrington, MA. The 1930 census lists the same man as born ca. 1863 in New Jersey, and his parents born in New Jersey as well (previous censuses correctly give their birthplace as Ireland). Alfred M. Costello's 1890 marriage record list him as a photographer born ca. 1864 in Brooklyn, the son of Alfred B. Costello.
