View raw data

Charles A. Scherer managed the Buffalo studio of Stephen J. Scherer until moving to New York City by 1905. Scherer's daughter, Clara P. Scherer was listed as a clerk in Scherer's Buffalo gallery. The 1905 New York census lists his "son" Sydney S. Shaw as a photographer living in his household. Shaw managed the studio from about that time until around 1916. The New York Times of September 1, 1918 reports that Scherer was discovered unconscious with a head wound at his "studio and bachelor quarters" on Hamilton Place. It was presumed that he had fallen in a fit of vertigo and died from striking his head.
