In 1893, the record notes, he was discharged at his own request. He returned to his home in Norristown, PA, where he is listed in the 1894 directory without occupation, though Charles E. and A. Percy Cochran, who share his address are listed as photographers. His wife is listed as his widow in 1899, living in Cumberland, NJ with her two sons.
