Bell was of the family of photographers which included his father Francis Hamilton Bell and several brothers, including Charles Milton Bell. The Bell & Hall studio occupied the address of Bell & Bro. which had closed the previous year with the death of his brother Thomas Bell. The following year (1877), Bell worked with his father, again under the name of Bell & Bro.
