Ella M. Barnett travelled extensively, including a period from 1918 to 1920 were she lived with her husband and infant son in Lima, Peru. It is not clear when she took up photography, but in 1925 she was manager of Publishers Photo Service. She was also listed as a Cotton Goods Manufacturer at her home address. In 1933 that address was her photo studio.
