View raw data

John W. Allderige was born in England in 1854, and arrived in the US in 1856. His father William was a photographer. There are stereoscopic views in the New York Public Library collection attributed to William Allderige & Son, documenting a tornado in 1878. It is not known whether "& Son" was John or his brother Frederick who was also a photographer. In 1882 it was reported that Frederick, was leaving his New Britain studio to partner with John in Waterbury. In 1888, John Allderige was issued a patent for a paper clip. The 1890 Waterbury directory indicates that he removed to Kenosha, Wisconsin, though it is unclear whether he was aphotographer there. In 1895 he was president and manager of the Heliogravure Printing Co. in Wallingford, Connecticut. That became the Allderige Art Co., photographers and artists' supplies. He died in 1904.
