Letkemann arrived from Cuxhaven, Germany in 1896 on the Auguste Victoria; his occupation is listed as photographer. The 1900 census lists his occupation as organist. Business directories from 1898 until 1914 give his occupation as notary. In 1916 he is a photographer again. In a 1917 New York Times article on a mayoral election scandal, in which he seems to have been a pawn, he is described as a photographer for the City Parks department.
