Jacob E. Rote opened his portrait studio in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in early June of 1883. By July Rote announced in his newspaper advertisements that "there has been such demand for LARGE PHOTOGRAPHS that I was compelled to get a VERY LARGE CAMERA BOX to meet the demand. We can now make you a PHOTO as small as the smallest locket will hold up to a 5-inch face, to fit an 18x22 Frame." In April of 1885 he began advertising Cabinet Cards, and in October of 1889 he announced having "just received from Koenigsburg, Prussia, two backgrounds made especially for bust and three-quarter length photographs."
