Herman Hoyer

American, 1823-1887

View raw data

Herman Hoyer was periodically a photographer in New York in the 1860s, appearing in the city directory in 1863 with a studio address, and again in 1867 with only a home address. That year, a photographer with the same name had a studio, Hoyer & Co. in Saint Louis, Missouri. The studio was evidently short-lived, and he worked odd jobs until 1882, when he opened a saloon. In December, 1886 Hoyer was among some 50 men arrested for committing election fraud by voting multiple times. The following year, his saloon failing, he committed suicide by drinking cyanite of potassium. "He was formerly a photographer, and while in this business became acquainted, to some extent, with the uses of the poison."
