Caleb Lysander Howe
American, 1811-1895
MaleBorn in Dummerton, Vermont on September 23, 1811, Caleb Lysander Howe learned daguerreotypy from a travelling photographer while a farmer in Dover in 1850. Howe travelled as a photographer in Vermont and New Hampshire until 1855, when he briefly had a studio in North Adams, Massachusetts. In 1856 he bought out the Brattleboro studio of John Lyman Lovell. He had two sons who became photographers: Nathan Sherman, who worked with him from at least 1860 until about 1872, and John C., who was a photographer by 1870. Nathan was working in insurance and real estate by 1874, when the first advertisements are found for C. L. Howe & Son. John partnered with his father under this name, until the elder Howe's death from dementia in 1896. John continued the studio under this name until at least 1898, and possibly into 1899.
