The 1860 census lists Jane C. Howard's occupation as "Photograph Gallery" in Contra Costa County, CA. In 1870, she is in Martinez, CA with occupation, and in 1880 she is in Oakland "keeping house". City directory entries for her husband, John R. Howard, suggest they arrived in Oakland around 1877. He continues to be listed until the mid 1880s, when Mrs. Jane C. Howard appears at his residential address in 1888. She remains here until, curiously, the 1895 directory reports that she died "September 4, 93".
