Caleb Lysander Howe was active in the Brattleboro, Vermont vicinity by the late 1850s. In 1860, his son Nathan Sherman was a photographer, and by 1870 John C. Howe was also a photographer. Although the Vermont business directory for 1874 lists only the elder Howe as a photographer, advertisements for C. L. Howe & Son appeared in newspapers in April of that year. The partner was John C. Howe, as Nathan had gone into insurance and real estate by this time. C. L. Howe & Son continued until the elder Howe's death of dementia in 1896. John C. Howe continued to use the name C. L. Howe & Son until at least 1898, and possibly into 1899.
