View raw data

Napoleon Sarony was a lithographer for Currier & Ives before leaving in 1846 to found his own studio, Sarony & Major, in partnership with Henry Major. Though Major was evidently still with the studio, the name appeared as Sarony & Co. from 1854 to 1856. The following year they were joined by Joseph F. Knapp and the firm became Sarony, Major & Knapp. By 1866, Sarony had left the firm, which continued as Major & Knapp. Sarony again worked under the name of Sarony & Co. from 1869 to 1871, and was now exclusively a photographer and dealer of photo materials. By 1873, his son Otto was working with him. Otto continued the studio after his father's death on November 9, 1896.
